Ayomal Akalanka wins silver, sets new record

Sri Lankan youth athlete Ayomal Akalanka won a silver medal at the Asian Under 23 Athletics Championships.

At the tournament held in China, Akalanka clocked a time of 49.03 seconds to finish the race in the 400 metres hurdles event.

This marks a new Sri Lankan record, renewing a 26-year-old record.

Veteran athlete Harijan Ratnayake previously held the Sri Lankan record in this event.

He set that record with a time of 49.44 seconds at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Jakarta on August 31, 2000.
