England suffered a heartbreaking exit from the World Cup semi-final after Argentina struck twice in the final minutes to secure a 2-1 victory in Atlanta. Head coach Thomas Tuchel saw his side collapse late in the game despite holding a second-half lead in a highly charged encounter.

Anthony Gordon put England ahead in the 55th minute, sliding the ball in at the far post after a precise right-wing cross from Morgan Rogers. The goal sparked an intense period of pressure from Argentina, forcing England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to make a brilliant reflex save from Nico Gonzalez, while Alexis Mac Allister hit the woodwork twice.

Tuchel attempted to defend the lead by shifting to a back five, replacing goalscorer Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa with 18 minutes remaining and later introducing Dan Burn. The cautious strategy backfired as it invited relentless pressure, pinning England inside their own penalty area.

Argentina finally capitalised on their momentum five minutes from time when Enzo Fernandez unleashed a magnificent 25-yard drive past Pickford to equalise. In the 92nd minute, Lionel Messi turned provider once more, delivering a right-footed cross for Lautaro Martinez to head home the dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The victory sends Argentina to the World Cup final against Spain this Sunday, where the 39-year-old Messi will look to retain the global crown against Lamine Yamal and the reigning European champions. Defeated England must now prepare to face France in the third-place play-off match on Saturday.
