The construction of the fisheries harbour at Point Pedro commenced this morning under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
This fisheries harbour which is being built under the program to uplift the fisheries industry in the North will be the largest fisheries harbour built in Sri Lanka and the investment is approximately LKR 12,600 million.
This harbour can provide facilities for 300 large multi-day fishing boats at once and covers an area of 7.1 hectares with a basin area of 18.6 hectares.
The harbour breakwaters are at 880 meters and 480 meters.
Services of a fully equipped fishing harbor such as secure handling of the world's most modern fishing vessels, unloading of fishing harvest, loading fuel and other items, vessel repairs, ice and cold storage facilities, equipment for vessels, sale of fish, mending of nets, shops, meeting room facilities, coast guard services and fisheries department officer services can be obtained from this harbour.
