Final report of the Easter Commission to the President today

The final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing into the Easter attacks will be handed over to the President today.

For nearly 18 months, the commission questioned 457 witnesses about the attacks.

On April 21, 2019, a series of suicide bombings at eight locations, including three churches, claimed the lives of 260 people.

A five-member Presidential Commission of Inquiry was set up on September 20, 2019 to investigate the attacks on Easter Sunday.

The Commission was chaired by Supreme Court Judge Janak de Silva and the other members were, Court of Appeal Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne, retired Court of Appeal Judge Sunil Rajapaksa, retired High Court Judge Bandula Kumara Atapattu and retired Ministry Secretary Mangalika Adhikari.

The first interim report of the Commission was submitted on December 20, 2019 and the second interim report on March 2, 2020 to the former President and the current President.

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry's Police Investigation Unit recorded statements from 1,588 people about the attack, including former President Maithripala Sirisena who was also the Defense Minister at the time and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
