A strong earthquake jolted Tokyo and surrounding areas in eastern Japan on Sunday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the weather agency said.
The magnitude 5 quake, which occurred at 12:31 p.m., measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Ibaraki Prefecture northeast of the capital and other areas.
There have been no reports of abnormalities at any of the nuclear facilities in Ibaraki Prefecture, include the Tokai No. 2 Nuclear Power Plant, which has not been in operation since March 2011.
According to NHK, shinkansen operations in the area were briefly suspended but they have resumed. Some sections of the JR Mito Line are currently operating at reduced speed.
