General Shavendra Silva Re-appointed as Chief of Defence Staff

In a recent announcement, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has re-appointed General Shavendra Silva as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) for an additional six months. This extension, formalized through an extraordinary gazette issued under Section 3 of the Chief of Defence Staff Act, No. 35 of 2009, will see General Silva's term extended from June 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024.

General Silva, who was first appointed as the CDS on June 1, 2022, has been a pivotal figure in Sri Lanka's military leadership. His re-appointment is seen as a strategic move to maintain continuity and stability within the nation's defence apparatus during a critical period.

Under his leadership, the Sri Lankan military has undergone significant reforms aimed at enhancing the operational readiness and interoperability of the armed forces. General Silva's extensive experience and proven track record have been instrumental in driving these initiatives forward.
