Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, has resigned from his parliamentary seat.
Dr. Suriyapperuma had served as a National List Member for the National People's Power.
Parliament confirmed the resignation, noting that Secretary-General Kushani Rohanadeera informed the Chairman of the Election Commission in a letter.
Political sources indicate that Dr. Suriyapperuma's resignation paves the way for him to become the new Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
This position became vacant following the retirement of Mahinda Siriwardana, the former Treasury Secretary.
