Mawathagama Police have received nearly 1,000 phone calls from individuals wishing to adopt the two-day-old baby girl found abandoned near a tree in a paddy field in the Paragahadeniya area of Kurunegala-Mawathagama.

A police spokesperson stated that many of these calls came from Sri Lankans residing in countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Italy.

All callers interested in adopting the child were informed of the necessary legal procedures.

The mother of the infant has not yet been identified.

Police are continuing their investigations into the incident.

When police initially requested nearby women to pick up the abandoned baby, they hesitated.

However, a man named P.A. Chandana Kumara Jayawardena, a driver by profession and a resident of Owattawela Wawuda, came forward to help.

Separately, Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Saroja Paulraj, noted a recent increase in pregnancies among schoolgirls.
