An elephant, which came from the Maduru Oya National Park in search of water, has fallen into the ZD canal in the Pimburattawa area of Aralaganwila.
According to Wildlife officials from Weheragala, the elephant has been swept away by the strong current for about five kilometres.
Wildlife officers are now attempting to rescue the animal using ropes and tyres, with assistance from the Aralaganwila Police and local residents.
