Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who was issued a warrant for his arrest, returned to the island today (29).
Rajapaksa had departed for a private visit yesterday (28), reportedly on the same flight on which President Anura Kumara Dissanayake left for the Maldives.
He is expected to appear before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court today through a motion.
The warrant was issued by Hambantota Chief Magistrate Oshadha Mahaarachchi yesterday after Rajapaksa failed to appear in a case filed over disorderly conduct during a protest against the sale of the Hambantota Port in 2017.
Eight individuals, including Rajapaksa, were earlier arrested and remanded in connection with the incident before being released on bail.
However, the court issued the warrant when the MP failed to appear at the latest hearing.
