The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed its strong displeasure regarding the incident where a police constable allegedly assaulted a lawyer within the Mount Lavinia Court premises.
In a statement, the BASL affirmed its firm opposition to police officers using force against any individual. The Association called upon the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
The police constable accused of assaulting the lawyer within the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court premises was arrested yesterday and remanded until the day after tomorrow (October 13).
The incident occurred when a dispute arose between the lawyer and the police officer while a prison bus was attempting to leave the court premises, as it was unable to pass due to the lawyer's parked car.
The altercation reportedly escalated, leading to the police constable allegedly assaulting the lawyer.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya, speaking to the media after an event in Ampara, commented on the incident.
He stated that investigations are currently underway and affirmed that the Sri Lanka Police will stand by the police officer involved.
The IGP further noted that the lawyer's behaviour and conduct are also being reviewed through video footage, expressing confidence that the court will administer justice appropriately.
