A language training program in Sinhala and Tamil for Parliamentarians commenced at the Parliament complex, presided over by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.
The Parliamentary Services Bureau organised the program, with support from the Department of Official Languages.
The goal is to strengthen communication skills among Parliamentarians and promote better understanding between communities.
Inaugurating the program, Speaker Wickramaratne underscored the significance of language in mitigating ethnic and religious tensions.
He said that many conflicts start when people cannot properly communicate in a specific language.
He also stated that Parliamentarians should lead by example in fostering cooperation and respect among all Sri Lankans.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Justice and National Integration HarshananaNanayakkara said that language is a form of respect, more than just a means of communication.
The Minister emphasised that no citizen should receive different treatment based on the language they speak, and Parliament's commitment to trilingualism supports the National Languages Policy.
A total of 21 Parliamentarians registered for the Sinhala language course, while 63 registered for the Tamil language course.
Attendees included Deputy Chairperson of Committees HemaliWeerasekara, Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General Chaminda Kularatne, and Commissioner General of Official Languages NandanaHettiarchchi, along with other department officials.
