The 2026 budget for the Kandy Municipal Council, currently held by the National People's Power (NPP), was approved today (18) with a majority of five votes.
Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayaka presented the financial statement for the upcoming year, after which the opposition called for a formal vote.
The budget received support from 24 NPP members and one independent member, Susil Rohan. In contrast, 20 opposition members voted against the proposal. One independent opposition member, Mohamed Atique Deen, abstained from voting.
Speaking to the media following the victory, Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayaka claimed that while many opposition members were initially prepared to support the budget, they were prevented from doing so due to pressure from their respective party leaderships.
