Prime Minister returns to the island

A four-day official visit to Switzerland concluded today (23) as Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and a high-level delegation arrived back in the island this morning.

The group participated in the 2026 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting held in Davos from January 19 to 22.

The Prime Minister held extensive discussions with global leaders, heads of international financial institutions, and business executives to strengthen the nation's future economic path.

Labor Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando accompanied the Prime Minister during these sessions.

Bilateral talks with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and ADB President Masato Kanda focused on securing the necessary support to ensure domestic financial stability.

Meetings with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo further expanded international relations and bolstered global confidence in the country.

Policy positions were clarified during a special speech at the 'World Women Davos Agenda 2026' and through participation in stakeholder dialogues regarding the job crisis in emerging markets and global talent development.

The Prime Minister also promoted the future vision of the local tourism sector during a high-level conversation at the Global Tourism Forum (GTF).

Investment opportunities were explored through discussions with leaders of international firms like AP Moller-Maersk and the Swiss business community.

The visit included observations of several vocational training institutes in Switzerland and a meeting with Sri Lankan businessmen living there to discuss their contribution to national development.
