Three-wheel drivers push for unified fare system

A group of three-wheel drivers met with the Inspector General of Police to request a common price formula or integrated fare system for both app-based and independent transport services.

A representative of the drivers' association stated that current low fares offered by ride-sharing apps draw passengers away from traditional taxis.

This pricing structure severely impacts the daily income of independent drivers.

The representatives argued that a uniform fare for both categories would allow passengers to choose their preferred service freely without being swayed by price disparities.

While denying allegations of overcharging by independent drivers, the representative noted that they charge a fixed rate between Rs. 85 and Rs. 100 for the first kilometre.

He further claimed to possess evidence that app-based services significantly hike prices during peak hours.

Drivers emphasised that the National Transport Commission holds the authority to set fares, rather than private companies.

They urged the IGP to implement formal regulations that protect the rights of professional drivers while ensuring fairness for passengers.

Tension between app-based and local drivers recently surfaced in tourist hotspots like Ella and Sigiriya due to these unresolved issues.
