Compensation projects launch in Kandy

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake leads a ceremony today to provide relief for victims of Cyclone Ditva and initiate several key development projects in the Kandy district. The event, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the Central Provincial Council Auditorium in Kundasale, focuses on distributing compensation to families and entrepreneurs from the Kundasale, Medadumbara, Pathadumbara, and Panwila divisional secretariats.

The President's Media Division confirmed that business owners whose machinery or premises suffered damage will receive Rs. 200,000 each to restart their operations. For residents whose homes were destroyed, a total compensation package of Rs. 5 million is allocated, with the first instalment of Rs. 2 million distributed via checks today.

Beyond disaster relief, the visit marks the commencement of major transport infrastructure. The President will officially launch the construction of the Mahaiyawa tunnel on the Kandy-Jaffna road and resume work on the Gatambe flyover, which had previously been stalled. These projects aim to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity within the hill capital.
