BASL raises concerns over national security

Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President Rajiv Amarasuriya states that while the public elects a government with the expectation of safety, there is currently a lack of security even for people to walk on the streets.

He made these remarks during a press conference held this morning (14) regarding the shooting of a lawyer and his lawyer wife in a supermarket parking lot near the Akuregoda Army Headquarters in Battaramulla.

The BASL President emphasises that criminals must be arrested and the law must be strictly enforced to send a clear message to both local society and the international community.

He expresses deep condolences to the families of the young couple and notes that such an incident occurring in a high-security zone is something never expected.

He further points out that while the legal system must provide representation for any suspect, the government and police hold a massive responsibility to ensure such crimes do not go unpunished.

According to the President, the government's primary obligation is to provide security for the people who voted for them, yet citizens currently feel unprotected. He notes that the association will decide on its next constitutional steps regarding the matter tomorrow (15), marking the first such meeting in 14 years.
