A Sub-Inspector serving as the OIC from the Ragama Police was arrested for allegedly accepting a Rs. 10,000 bribe to allow a business to operate at a weekly fair.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption confirmed the apprehension of the 58-year-old officer.
The investigation began following a complaint from a chicken stall owner in the Ragama market area.
The suspect reportedly demanded a weekly payment of Rs. 5,000 from the businessman to ensure his trade activities continued without interference.
Bribery Commission officials conducted a raid at the market center, catching the officer while he accepted the Rs. 10,000 sum, which represented two weeks of arrears.
Police sources revealed the suspect arrived at the location on an official motorcycle, having logged his status as being on active traffic duty in Ragama town alongside a sergeant.
The Commission continues its investigation into the matter, and the suspect is due before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (19).
