The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued an order to seize a two-storey house and land located in the Katuwala area for a period of seven days, after it was revealed that the property had been purchased using money earned through illegal drug trafficking.
The order was issued after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) presented facts before the court.
The investigation was launched following information received by the Police Narcotics Bureau, which stated that a woman residing in Peliyagoda had earned illegal assets through drug trafficking activities.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had purchased a 10-perch land in the Diulapitiya, Katuwala area using proceeds from drug trafficking and had constructed a two-storey house on it.
Accordingly, acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the CID requested a court order to freeze the property for seven days with effect from the 17th.
Meanwhile, the suspect was arrested on May 21 in connection with drug trafficking and has been remanded several times after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 05.
She has now been further remanded until tomorrow (19), according to the latest court order.
Further investigations are being carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department.
