A nine-year-old girl died upon admission to the hospital after being snatched by a crocodile while bathing in a tank in the Maradankadawala area yesterday (19) afternoon, police stated.
The child went to the tank with her grandmother and was attacked by the crocodile while bathing at a designated spot.
The deceased was a Grade 4 student residing in the Heenukkiriyawa area of Ganewalpola.
A large number of residents gathered at the location upon hearing the news, and authorities at the police station and the Ganewalpola Wildlife Office received notification regarding the incident.
The girl was located in the evening following a four-hour search operation conducted by residents and police officers.
The child was rescued from the crocodile and rushed to the Maradankadawala Hospital.
The unfortunate death occurred while she was being admitted to the hospital, according to police.
Further investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Maradankadawala Police.
