New Year transport services are scheduled to commence this Thursday, the 09th, according to Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) Chairman Sajeewa Kanagaratne.
Approximately 1,500 additional buses are deployed for this purpose, with operations planned from the Colombo Central Bus Stand to numerous destinations including Hatton, Badulla, Kandy, Bandarawela, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Chilaw, and Puttalam. Additionally, special SLTB New Year services will operate on expressways, with priority given to Galle and Matara destinations. The National Transport Commission also plans to start special holiday services next week.
Simultaneously, the Railway Department is set to begin special New Year train services this Thursday. General Manager of Railways Ravindra Padmapriya noted that train schedules are prepared based on passenger demand. Furthermore, the Railway Department stated that train operations on the Northern Line from Colombo Fort to Kankesanturai will resume on the 09th.
In related developments, the modernised Pettah Central Bus Stand, renovated with the labor contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force, is scheduled to open this Wednesday morning. The renovation of the two-terminal facility cost 424 million rupees. Facilities are upgraded to utilise the ground floor as the bus yard, the second floor for driver and conductor rest areas, and the third floor for administrative and operational services.
