Four children drowned this afternoon (30) after a raft capsised at Mangalapura Villu in the Bandaranayakapura area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Vanathavilluwa Police.
Five 16-year-olds residing in Bandaranayakapura and Mangalapura travelled to the location on a raft to pick flowers when the vessel unexpectedly overturned. One child managed to swim to safety, but the other four were unable to escape and drowned.
The bodies of the four victims remain at the Puttalam Hospital mortuary. The children attended the same school in the area, and Vanathavilluwa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
