Jaffna District Member of Parliament Ramanathan Archuna was taken into custody following an incident in the Periyavilan area of Jaffna.
The arrest follows allegations that the MP pointed a firearm at and threatened two women during a dispute. Local reports indicate that the confrontation originated from a land ownership conflict; the MP claims the property belongs to him, while another party also asserts ownership. A related case is currently being heard at the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court.
The incident occurred on the 25th when the MP visited the site to clear the land. Two women arrived and engaged in a heated argument with him, claiming a portion of the land belonged to them. During the exchange, the MP allegedly brandished a pistol to threaten the unarmed women.
In a separate development related to the same confrontation, reports indicate that one of the women involved was also arrested and remanded after allegedly throwing a stone at the MP during the argument. Investigations into the matter continue.
