International Labour Day marked today

International Labour Day falls today, May 1.

Working people across the globe join the May Day celebrations for the 140th time this year.

The movement traces back to May 1, 1886, when workers gathered in Chicago, USA, to protest for an 8-hour working day.

Police attacked the demonstrations that continued for several days, leading to many deaths and numerous arrests.

In 1889, the year the struggle began, the International Labour Organisation declared May 1 as International Labour Day.

Concurrently, countries worldwide now observe International Labour Day on the first of May every year.
