Namal Rajapaksa accuses government of undermining worker rights

The current administration is being accused of treating employees unfairly and dismantling trade union rights by the Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

During a press briefing at Nelum Mawatha yesterday (01), Namal Rajapaksa stated that the government, which secured power with the help of the trade union movement, is now ignoring labour issues and failing to protect the interests of the working community. He remarked that the authorities now beat and chase away workers who seek intervention in union matters.

Namal Rajapaksa further alleged that the administration is acting against the interests of workers, which contradicts the stance it took whilst in opposition. He also detailed a series of events scheduled for International Labour Day, including floral tributes for T.B. Ilangaratne tomorrow morning. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to join several party members for the commemoration.

The former MP noted that religious programmes will take place across all constituencies to bless workers, with a specific ceremony at the Kelaniya Temple in the evening. He concluded by highlighting that Labour Day coincides with a Poya day this year, and as a Buddhist nation, religious observances must remain the priority.
