Protests in Hatton demanding rights for plantation community

A group of civil activists staged a protest in Hatton today (03) demanding safety, land rights, and equal rights for the plantation community. Organised by the Upcountry People's Front under the slogan “If you hit, we hit back—enough with the patience,” the demonstration lasted nearly three hours.

The primary cause for the protest involves an incident where security officers of a private estate company allegedly demolished temporary houses built by estate workers at the Neelagama estate in Kahawatta, Ratnapura. Activists participating in the rally stated they will no longer permit such occurrences within the plantation sector. They further announced plans to gather the plantation youth for a similar protest in front of Parliament on the 5th.
