Government to purchase local potatoes at guaranteed price

A guaranteed price of Rs.220 per kilogramme for local potatoes will come into effect from tomorrow, the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development announced.

Purchases will be conducted via the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment, with the stock set for distribution to consumers at subsidised rates through Lanka Sathosa. The Ministry confirmed that these transactions aim to support local producers while ensuring fair prices for the public.

Each farmer can sell a maximum of one thousand kilogrammes under this scheme. The initiative seeks to stabilise the local market by managing the supply chain through state-run cooperatives.
