Former soldier remanded over Ganemulla Sanjeewa case

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (15) ordered Mahesh Obeyesekere, a former army soldier considered to be the contract shooter of Ganemulla Sanjeewa who was shot dead inside the Colombo Additional Magistrate's Court, to be further remanded until the 29th.

The Magistrate issued this order following submissions made by the Criminal Investigation Department, presenting a further report related to the incident to the court.

Presenting the suspect to the court, the Criminal Investigation Department stated that this suspect had been detained and questioned.

According to the facts revealed there, the investigating officers informed the court that this suspect maintained connections with many underworld gang leaders and eight live ammunition rounds, army uniforms, and accessories were found in his residential house.

The investigating officers also informed the court that this suspect had failed to report for duty since 2 May 2023.

The investigating officers informed the court that he met Ganemulla Sanjeeva through Commando Salintha, and this suspect is connected to several murders carried out by shooting in areas including Negombo.

Since further investigations are to be conducted regarding the suspect related to the incident, the Criminal Investigation Department requested the court to remand the suspect.

Considering the presented facts, the Magistrate ordered the report of facts to the relevant Magistrate's Court regarding the possession of live ammunition and to present a report to the court on whether there are charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, and remanded the suspect until the 29th.
