A female suspect who fled with redeemed gold items after obtaining a loan of over 25.3 million rupees from a financial institution in Panadura to release the mortgaged items was remanded until the 26th of this month.
The Panadura Special Crimes Investigation Unit produced the suspect before the Panadura Magistrate's Court. Police stated that the woman, arrested in Panadura, is a 39-year-old resident of a housing scheme in Modara.
Police managed to recover a stock of gold items, valued at nearly ten million rupees, which the arrested suspect buried in the ground. The police initiated investigations into the incident based on a complaint lodged by a financial institution in Panadura.
According to the police, the woman arrived at the financial institution in Panadura on the 9th. She stated that she required a loan to redeem gold items worth 25,357,000 rupees mortgaged at another financial institution in Panadura.
The relevant institution provided her with the money based on a promise that she would hand over the gold items to them once they were redeemed. Subsequently, she went to the institution where the gold items were mortgaged, accompanied by two officers from the institution that provided the loan.
Investigations revealed that the suspect, after redeeming the gold items, craftily fled the location, evading the officers.
