Former Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa and his group face upcoming legal action for attempting to trespass into the War Heroes Memorial grounds at the Parliament Sports Complex, disrupting duties and ongoing rehearsals for the National War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony.
Police Headquarters announced the measure in an official statement.
All arrangements are finalised for a special commemoration ceremony led by the President at the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Parliament Sports Complex Memorial tomorrow (19) to mark National War Heroes Day, with final rehearsals and organizational work taking place on-site today (18).
While these preparation activities proceeded peacefully, a group of approximately 35 individuals, including Wimal Weerawansa, arrived at the location.
They attempted to enter the monument grounds unauthorized, interfering with the rehearsals and the personnel on duty.
Security officers deployed at the venue intervened immediately to thwart the intrusion, successfully removing the group from the restricted area.
Police Headquarters confirmed that subsequent legal proceedings will be initiated against the former MP and his associates for attempting to breach a secure zone and obstructing official duties.
