Police have launched a special investigation after a burglary was reported at the historic Sandagiri Seya Stupa in Hanthana, Kandy, a site revered by both local and international Buddhist devotees.
According to the chief incumbent of the temple, Venerable Gangasiripura Dhammaloka Thera, the incident occurred during the early hours of May 23, when unknown individuals broke open the two iron doors leading to the relic chamber of the stupa.
He stated that the matter was immediately reported to the Inspector General of Police, following which officers from the Kandy Headquarters Police swiftly arrived at the scene and commenced investigations.
Venerable Dhammaloka Thera further noted that several valuable offerings, including gold necklaces adorned with gemstones that had been placed on a golden casket enshrined within the stupa, had been stolen.
However, he emphasised that the golden casket itself, other valuable sacred items, and the relics enshrined inside remained unharmed.
He added that no damage had been caused to the stupa structure or other parts of the shrine, and that the rapid response of the police had already led to the discovery of significant information related to the incident.
Investigations are currently ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the theft.
