Grama Niladhari and another re-remanded over alleged Rs. 1 m bribe

A Grama Niladhari from the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat and another individual accused of soliciting and receiving a Rs. 1 million bribe are been remanded until June 9.

The order was issued today (25) by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after the suspects were produced before the Court by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

The accused persons have taken the bribe from a person during the payment of the first instalment of a Rs. 5 million government compensation package for full house damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

The suspects, identified as W.G. Nimal, a Grama Niladhari attached to the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat, and a civilian named Kruse Winston, were remanded accordingly.

Presenting further details to court, CAIBOC officials stated that the suspect had allegedly taken a Rs. 1 million bribe from the Rs. 2 million first installment of a Rs. 5 million government-approved compensation package intended for the complainant’s house, which was fully damaged due to Cyclone Ditwah.

After considering the submissions, the Magistrate ordered that all investigations be completed and a report be submitted to Court on the next hearing date.
