CaFFE criticises government over provincial council election delay remarks

Provincial council elections cannot take place this year because authorities directed a portion of the allocated funds to cover damages caused by Cyclone Ditwah, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated recently.

The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) issued a statement strongly condemning this claim.

Reholding provincial council elections was a pledge the current administration made to the public to secure power, the statement noted.

CaFFE emphasised that altering a promise made to the citizens while branding themselves as a people-friendly government remains inappropriate.

When the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration postponed local government elections in 2023, current government representatives, who sat in the opposition at the time, heavily criticised the move as anti-democratic.

Recalling this, CaFFE stated that the current administration's actions mirror that same anti-democratic behaviour.
