Rainy conditions to persist in southwestern Sri Lanka

The current rainy conditions in the southwestern parts of the island are expected to continue, according to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times today (28) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Northwestern provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Fairly heavy rains of about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Galle, Matara, Kalutara, and Ratnapura districts.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 1:00 PM.

Fairly strong winds blowing at times up to 30-40 kmph are expected on the western slopes of the central hills, and in the Northern, North-Central, Northwestern, and Southern provinces, as well as the Trincomalee district.

The department requests the public to take necessary precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
