The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has alleged that officials from the Health Ministry’s Emergency Inspection Unit abused their authority during a surprise inspection carried out at the Ragama Teaching Hospital on June 4.
GMOA President Dr. Sanjeewa Tennakoon stated that the matter had been brought to the attention of the Health Ministry Secretary, Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, both via letter and telephone.
He explained that the Emergency Inspection Unit typically monitors whether hospital staff report to duty on time, perform their duties properly, and whether patients are facing any issues.
Dr. Tennakoon said such inspections are generally accepted by the association, but claimed that officials who arrived at Ragama Hospital on the morning of the 4th acted in a manner that caused inconvenience and discomfort to doctors.
He further alleged that the conduct of the officials amounted to an abuse of power, prompting the GMOA to raise its concerns formally.
