Nationwide dengue prevention week begins

A nationwide dengue prevention week commenced today, covering the entire island. The programme runs until the 20th of this month.

Dengue cases are currently rising rapidly, with 24 fatalities reported across the island. National Dengue Control Unit Acting Director Dr Kapila Kannangara stated that 41,144 cases were recorded so far this year. He further noted that several hospitals issued red alerts warning that the hospital system will face an unbearable situation if this trend continues to escalate.

A new variant of the dengue virus is currently spreading within the country, according to Deputy Health Minister Hansaka Wijemuni, who spoke at a function held at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital yesterday.

Symptoms changed among children contracting the dengue disease, Consultant Paediatrician Dr Deepal Perera stated.

Public Health Inspectors Association of Sri Lanka President Upul Rohana urged all citizens to pay attention to control the current situation, warning that legal action will otherwise be enforced.
