192 Assistant Postmasters appointed tomorrow

The Sri Lanka Postal Department will issue permanent appointments to 192 acting Assistant Postmasters tomorrow (18) at the Colombo Central Post Office, the Ministry of Health and Mass Media announced.

The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

The ministry said the government has implemented several programmes to transform the network of sub post offices into a more efficient and high-quality service system.

As part of these efforts, the move has been taken under government guidance to strengthen human resources in the sub post office service structure.

The officials being made permanent had been serving in acting positions since around 2019.

According to a Cabinet memorandum submitted by the minister, out of 196 officers who had been serving in acting capacity before October 15, 2020, 192 who met the required qualifications will now receive permanent appointments with pensionable status.

The report also notes that Assistant Postmasters are required to secure buildings for operating sub post offices. The government-provided building allowance, previously Rs. 1,500, has been increased to Rs. 7,500 effective from April 1, 2025.

The sub postmaster service, which began in 1921 with just six sub post offices, has now expanded to 3,410 approved sub post offices islandwide, the ministry added.
