Scotland fans fly tiny plane for 22 hours to reach the US for World Cup

A pair of Scotland fans travelled in a tiny plane to watch their team in the World Cup, and the journey took 22 hours of flying to complete.

Since the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 11, we’ve already seen the incredible lengths fans will go through to support their teams, whether it’s bringing a duck wearing a soccer jersey or cleaning a stadium after a game.

Many of these stories have come from Scotland fans after the nation qualified for the first time since 1998, and one duo went through extreme lengths to watch the tournament in real-life.

David Smith and Fraser MacIntyre, who are also the chairman and vice-chairman of Scottish Championship side Ayr United, travelled to Canada to watch all three group stage matches. But rather than getting a flight with the rest of the Tartan Army, they decided to fly themselves.

“Ayr United were up playing Arbroath and we were driving back and we were talking about if [Scotland] got through,” Smith told the BBC. “Fraser said, ‘Why don’t we take the plane?’ I genuinely hadn’t been drinking and I said, ‘Yeah, let’s go for it.'”

It was far from an easy journey, as it required multiple stops. They set off from Prestwick in Scotland to Reykjavik, Iceland, which took four and a half hours by itself. From there, they flew to Greenland for just over two hours and landed in Kulusuk.

From Greenland, they made the journey to Iqaluit, Canada’s northernmost city, before heading down to Goose Bay. Then there was a four-and-a-half-hour-long trip to Montreal before finally ending with a two-hour journey to Providence. All in all, it took 22 hours of flying.

All of this was done in a small two-seater aircraft, which they nicknamed “Ayr Force One,” so no drinks were being served, no in-flight meals, and not even a toilet. However, they could blast some Scottish soccer songs to get them in the mood.

They landed in time to see their team beat Haiti 1-0 in the opening game after a goal from John McGinn.
