University of Peradeniya student expelled over drug haul

The university authorities took measures to cancel the student status and expel a student who was arrested by the police with a stock of drugs inside a University of Peradeniya hostel a few months ago, and was subjected to legal action.

The drugs were discovered when the university proctorial division inspected the hostel room of the student, who studied in the third year of the Faculty of Arts, based on information received that he was trafficking drugs within the university. Officers of the proctorial division also found a digital scale used to weigh and separate drugs and a sum of 75,000 rupees in the possession of the student.

While the police took legal action regarding the incident, the university also initiated an investigation into the matter. According to the investigation report conducted by the university, the decision was made to cancel the student's status of the student, and it is reported that the relevant letter was handed over to the student on the recommendations of Vice-Chancellor Professor Terrence Madhujith.
