A police inspector was arrested yesterday evening while accepting a bribe of one million rupees inside a hotel in Kalutara North, according to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The arrested official is a police inspector attached to the Kalutara South Police Station, serving in the Kalutara Special Crimes Investigation Bureau.
The bureau investigated a vehicle belonging to a complainant, following a complaint made yesterday.
The suspect demanded 1.1 million rupees to report facts to the court normally, without filing criminal charges over the vehicle, so that the complainant could reclaim ownership.
He accepted 100,000 rupees as a bribe from that amount on the 30th of last month. Officers from the Bribery Commission arrested him inside the Kalutara hotel yesterday evening while he accepted the remaining one million rupees as agreed.
The suspect inspector will be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
