Cabinet approves removal of indelible ink use in elections

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the removal of legal provisions to suspend the method of marking voters using indelible ink during elections.

The approval followed a proposal presented by the President.

According to the country's existing electoral laws, verifying the identity of voters through a valid identity card and marking the finger using indelible ink remained mandatory in every election held from the year 2004 to date.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the President to take the necessary steps to remove the following legal provisions:

Section 36 of the Presidential Elections Act, No. 15 of 1981. Section 38 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981. Section 36 of the Provincial Councils Elections Act, No. 2 of 1988. Section 53A of the Local Authorities Elections Ordinance (Chapter 262). Section 21 of the Referendum Act, No. 7 of 1981.
