Mahawatte Chamara remanded until July 4

Chamara Sampath Rodrigo alias "Mahawatte Chamara," who is allegedly involved in a number of organised crimes and was held under detention orders after being arrested while hiding in Dubai and brought to this country, was ordered to be remanded until the 25th by Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva today (23).

The magistrate issued this order after the Central Crimes Investigation Bureau produced the suspect before the court.

The investigation officers requested the court at this instance to order the prison officials to direct the suspect to court number 4 of the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court, as a case regarding possession of firearms was filed against this suspect before that court.

The investigation officers submitted facts to the court, mentioning that another case was thus filed against the suspect regarding possession of weapons.

Furthermore, they requested to conclude this existing case and direct the suspect to the case pending in court number 4.

At that moment, the magistrate pointed out that a case under the Prevention of Terrorism Act cannot be concluded in that manner, and that it is not mentioned in the submitted B report. The investigation officers then stated to the court that they would submit facts to court regarding the matter on the next case date.

Subsequently, the suspect was produced before court number 04 regarding the relevant incident.

At that instance, Colombo Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya today (23) ordered to remand the suspect until the 4th of July for the case relevant to the incident of possessing weapons.
