Agalawatta PS Deputy Chairman who supported NPP hands-over resignation

Indika Jayalath, a member of the independent group that supported the ruling party in securing control of the Agalawatta Pradeshiya Sabha, has submitted his resignation as Deputy Chairman to the council's Chairman, Lalith Kumarasinghe, today (26).

Jayalath said he had chosen to resign on the very day marking one year since he assumed office as Deputy Chairman.

In his resignation letter, he also announced his withdrawal from the Finance and Policy Committee and the Technical Services Committee.

Jayalath cited several reasons for his decision, including the failure to implement plans to properly redevelop Agalawatta town, leaving the town in a neglected condition.

He also alleged that work on a two-acre site in Dulwella, allocated for a new court complex and police station to ease congestion at the Matugama Magistrate's Court, had been halted due to political interference.

He further claimed that proposals to establish a 'Hela Bojun' restaurant and commercial complex on land released by the Divisional Secretary had not received support.

Among his other grievances were repeated delays in demolishing a dilapidated building at the Agalawatta junction that he said poses a danger to the public and schoolchildren, the failure to prioritise the construction of a new public toilet system despite the council holding nearly Rs. 40 million in reserves, and the refusal to approve a solar-powered street lighting project he had offered to fund personally, along with plans to improve lighting across the area's 11 wards.

Jayalath also alleged that a report he had prepared proposing solutions to the country's energy crisis, which he said had received praise from experts, was ignored by the Chairman and the National People's Power (NPP) group without being properly considered.

He further cited what he described as politically motivated delays in responding to requests for maintenance of the Ridirekhagama Road as another reason for stepping down.
