BASL opposes changes to judicial retirement age

Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President Rajeev Amarasuriya emphasises that the retirement age for Court of Appeal and Supreme Court judges should not be altered arbitrarily.

He noted that the association maintains the position that any such amendment is currently unnecessary and entirely inappropriate.

Amarasuriya made these remarks while addressing a special public forum in Colombo, organised by the BASL to discuss reports of a potential constitutional amendment by the government.

The proposal reportedly aims to increase the current retirement ages of 63 for Court of Appeal judges and 65 for Supreme Court judges.

The BASL previously took steps to submit a special letter, signed by Amarasuriya, to the President to formally register the association's strong opposition and stance regarding this matter.
