Special dengue control operation begins in Western Province

A special dengue control operation commences today (05) across 22 high-risk zones in the Western Province.

Health authorities, the tri-forces, police, state institutions, and volunteer organisations are participating in this initiative.

The operation targets nine medical officer of health (MOH) divisions in the Colombo District, including Maharagama, Kaduwela, Homagama, Gotatuwa, Battaramulla, Piliyandala, and three zones within the Colombo Municipal Council.

Additionally, the drive covers eight MOH divisions in the Gampaha District—Biyagama, Kelaniya, Seeduwa, Ja-Ela, Mahara, Wattala, Negombo, and Minuwangoda—as well as five MOH divisions in the Kalutara District: Panadura, Bandaragama, Horana, Ingiriya, and Kalutara.

The national death toll from dengue currently stands at 39, with a total of 58,810 cases reported so far this year.

Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, stated yesterday that mosquito breeding sites were still identified in 40% of the schools inspected.
