Committee appointed to probe Negombo prison property damage

A committee was appointed to investigate property damage resulting from a clash at the Negombo prison.

Prisons Commissioner and Prisons Media Spokesperson A.C. Gajanayake stated that, in addition to this committee, the department appointed another investigative committee to look into the clash. Plans are underway to transfer more than 600 inmates currently at the Negombo prison to other correctional facilities.

The Prisons Department decided to grant immediate promotions and compensation to the eight prison officials who lost their lives in the Negombo prison clash.

More than 100 individuals, including prison officials, sustained injuries, and 29 people lost their lives following a confrontation between two groups of inmates over the betrayal of a drug trafficking operation.

The deceased consist of eight prison officials and 21 inmates.
