A Police Special Task Force (STF) sergeant unexpectedly fell into the Mahaweli River and lost his life while conducting a raid on an illegal sand mining operation in the Chiththanthetti area of Mutur.
The deceased officer, aged 41, served at the Kantale Sooriyapura STF camp.
A team of six STF officers went to conduct the raid yesterday at around 7:00 pm, during which the sergeant fell into the Mahaweli River and faced this mishap.
Navy divers recovered his body this morning following a special search operation.
