Independence Square walking path a deadly trap - Mayor responds to MP Harsha's request

The famous Independence Square walking path, built 15 years ago under the initiative of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the health and wellbeing of the people in Colombo city, is currently in an extremely dilapidated condition.

Thousands of civilians, including elderly individuals who use the location daily, face a highly dangerous situation due to this.

Member of Parliament Harsha de Silva pointed this out in a special disclosure on his official X social media account.

People using the path frequently fall and sustain injuries because the pebbles on the path surface, creating a rough ground, the MP stated.

The public also faces severe inconvenience as mounds of soil brought for renovation work remain unused for several months.

MP Harsha requested immediate attention from Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar and the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

In response, the Mayor stated that steps will be taken to immediately inform the relevant subject ministry and the minister about the matter.

The path, which is under the Urban Development Authority, should be handed over immediately to the Colombo Municipal Council to carry out maintenance work properly, Harsha de Silva further proposed.
