New strategy to increase tourist spending

Plans are underway to significantly increase the average amount spent by visitors during their stay in the country to boost the tourism sector's contribution to the economy.

Tourism Deputy Minister Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe announced this initiative during a meeting at the Kalutara District Secretariat focused on strengthening the district's tourism industry.

Currently, the average tourist spends approximately $148, marking a decline from the $171 recorded in 2018 and 2019.

A study conducted by the government after taking office examined shifts in tourist behavior and spending patterns following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Improving the overall visitor experience remains key to increasing tourist spending, a target that requires a planned and systematic approach.
