SLT directed to release email data in Treasury fraud case

Copies of the email data system of the Public Debt Management Department must be provided to the technical committee headed by the University of Colombo, in connection with the fraudulent disposal of 2.5 million US dollars of government funds belonging to the Sri Lanka Treasury.

Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasinghe issued this order to Sri Lanka Telecom today.

The Magistrate issued the order after considering a motion filed in the Fort Magistrate's Court today by the Criminal Investigation Department, which requested an order to obtain the data copies held by Sri Lanka Telecom for the ongoing investigations into the fraudulent incident.

The Criminal Investigation Department previously informed the court that hard drives containing 16 terabytes of computer data retrieved during the investigation were forwarded to the University of Colombo for further analysis. Consequently, the Criminal Investigation Department requested the court to order that copies of the email data system of the Public Debt Management Department be provided to the technical committee appointed under the University of Colombo.

Filing a motion in court today, the Criminal Investigation Department stated that issuing an order to provide the email data copies of the Public Debt Management Department to the technical committee is essential for the extensive investigations being conducted into the large-scale financial fraud.

Considering all the submissions, the Fort Magistrate took steps to issue the order to Sri Lanka Telecom to provide the relevant data copies to the technical committee for investigation purposes.
